The Plant Breeding and Genetics Society of Nepal (PBaGSoN) was formally established in 2019. However, its foundation can be traced back to the First Plant Breeder Meet, held on January 17, 1999, in Lumle, Kaski. This seminar marked the beginning of a dedicated society aimed at bringing together experts and professionals in plant breeding and genetics. PBaGSoN's mission revolves around the advancement of six key subject areas—genetics, agrobiodiversity, seed science, breeding, biotechnology, and biostatistics (GAS-3B). The society is committed to fostering innovation and improving agricultural and forestry practices in Nepal, with a broader goal of contributing to sustainable development. PBaGSoN has made significant contributions to the advancement of plant genetics, agrobiodiversity, and related fields. By offering expertise to the Government of Nepal (GoN), various organizations, and individuals, the society addresses issues and challenges within these six disciplines. PBaGSoN actively participates in policy and decision-making processes, collaborating with other societies, government organizations (GOs), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), international NGOs, private companies, and universities. Members play crucial roles in committees, task forces, and working groups at both national and international levels, shaping the future of plant breeding and genetics.
The society regularly organizes events such as talk programs, interaction sessions, training workshops, field visits, and award ceremonies for both scientists and farmers. PBaGSoN also publishes journals and proceedings, serving as a platform for sharing research and knowledge. As per its legislation, the society holds an annual general meeting (AGM) and a convention every three years. The 5th AGM was recently held on February 11, 2024, in Khumaltar, where plant breeders were felicitated, and the society’s journal and awards were conceptualized. During this meeting, PBaGSoN also laid out its vision, strategy, and action plan for the coming years. PBaGSoN is committed to the research, education, and development of GAS-3B disciplines. I invite all relevant individuals and organizations to join and contribute—whether financially, in-kind, or technically—to support the society's mission. Let us work together to advance innovation in GAS-3B, and I encourage everyone to actively participate in these initiatives for the betterment of our field.
